Matalan’s major fashion moment explained

Matalan is stepping into a significant new era this Autumn, revealing a major shift in the high-street retailer’s direction. Launching on 12 September 2026, the Autumn/Winter collection prioritizes design and quality while maintaining a focus on value. The new era sees the brand utilizing sharper silhouettes and raised fabrics, aiming to redefine its image through wardrobe classics.
Fashion-forward pieces for the season
The lineup includes structured tailoring and butter-soft leather jackets alongside heritage-inspired checks and oversized knitwear. Hero items like the Grey Pinstripe Suit feature pleat-detail trousers and an oversized fit for a relaxed office look. The Check Tie-Neck Blouse comes in Khaki and Burgundy, offering a day-to-night staple for the office and dinner. Other key pieces include the Barn Jackets in denim and suedette, and the Check Button Jacket, which adds scarf detailing to Autumn layering.
Style recommendations for the collection suggest pairing the Grey Pinstripe Suit with court heels or slimline trainers. The Check Button Jacket works well with Barrel Leg Jeans and Peg-Heel Suede Boots for an off-duty appearance. These items are designed to slot effortlessly into existing wardrobes, prioritizing versatility.
This collection also introduces delicate lace elements and the return of the must-have loafer, alongside oversized cosy knitwear. The Barn Jackets, available in a classic denim wash and brown suedette, offer a fresh take on the quintessential Autumn jacket, with a cinched waist adding a more defined, tailored silhouette.

Expanding beyond the clothing
The transformation extends to the retail environment, with significant investment planned for stores, visual merchandising, and the digital experience. Chief product, brand and commercial officer Sarah Welsh stated that this season focuses on changing the perception of what Matalan can be. She described the approach as directional, playing with stronger silhouettes and richer textures while keeping the final products wearable and effortless.
The strategy aims to create a fresh and contemporary feel that retains the quality and value the retailer is known for. By aligning the physical and digital customer journey with the fashion direction, the company hopes to solidify this new chapter in its history.
Welsh emphasized that the evolution goes well beyond the clothing range alone. The retailer is dedicating resources to upgrade the physical store environments and enhance the visual merchandising displays to mirror the new fashion direction. Simultaneously, the digital experience is being overhauled to ensure that the online customer journey feels as fresh, considered, and fashion-forward as the physical shopping trip.
